Blood Pressure Service

Blood pressure is a measure of the force of your blood when it pushes against the side of your blood vessels; if the pressure is too high, it can put an extra strain on your heart, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes and other health implications.

1 in 4 adults are affected by high blood pressure in the UK, it is known as the ‘silent killer’ as it rarely causes any symptoms. In England alone, there are around 5.5 million people that are undiagnosed, and the only way to find out is to regularly get your blood pressure measured.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

If your blood pressure readings fall within the ‘High/Very High’ category, we can offer you a 24-hour blood pressure monitor. The cuff is worn on the upper arm, and it is small and discrete. The monitor will take readings every 30/60 minutes automatically throughout the day whilst you are awake and asleep whilst carrying out your usual daily activities – living your normal life.

Why do I need to get a 24-hour reading?

Standard clinic blood pressure readings only give you a measurement for that specific moment in time, however the ABPM device will periodically gather readings throughout the day, producing a detailed report for our pharmacist to see how and when your blood pressure fluctuates. There are some cases where patients can also get anxious when having their blood pressure taken in a clinical setting, known as ‘white coat’ syndrome – ABPM aids to rule this out. Feel free to discuss your eligibility with our friendly team and we look forward to seeing you at Padiham Pharmacy.
