Impetigo

Adults and Children 1 Years & Over

What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is an acute condition of the skin caused by bacteria. It is characterised by a collection of pus-filled sores/blisters most commonly around the mouth, nose and sometimes the hands. When the blisters burst, they usually crust over giving a yellowish appearance. Whilst it is more prevalent in children it can also affect adults.

How Can We Help?

When a patient with impetigo presents to the pharmacy, our pharmacist will make an assessment to rule out other conditions.

Once a diagnosis of impetigo is confirmed they may be able to offer you an antibiotic cream or a course of oral antibiotics to treat the infection.

What can You do?

As impetigo is a highly contagious condition it is important to treat it promptly and take care in avoiding its spread.

You can do this by:

• Avoiding school or work whilst infected
• Using separate towels and washing them regularly
• Avoid direct skin contact with others
• Keeping distance from high-risk groups e.g. those with weaker immune systems
• Get prompt treatment
